Before anyone goes crazy I want to state that this if not actually true. It is just a wish of mine and other Stooges fans around the world. I must assume that Jim's casting of James Newell Osterberg Jr. in dead man must mean that Jim himself is a Stooges fan. A documentary about the Stooges needs to be made and now is the best time for that to ever occur. If you are a fan of the Stooges and Iggy Pop then you must be aware of the incredible resurgence the band has been experiencing since their reunion in 2003. After 30 years apart, upon reforming as the Stooges (not Iggy &, but the Stooges) the band were having some of the most exuberant and wide spread success of their career. Unfortunately, this elation would be short lived when the sudden and tragic death of the beloved Ron Asheton shocked us all. A devastating blow that would have in all likelihood derailed this glorious reunion if suffered by lesser bands. However, we are not talking about weaklings, we are talking about "a most powerful band, the Stooges." With a fortuitous move almost no Stooge fan saw coming Iggy invited James "the Skull" Williamson to rejoining the band. The man that had helped to reshape the Stooges sound for the Raw Power album would be returning and the dream that so many Stooges fans had seen at last fulfilled in 2003 would not die with Ron. With the Stooges recent nomination for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, the announcement of dates for 2009's ATP and a 2010 tour being planned along with recent releases of both Robert Matheu's book titled "the Stooges: An Authorized and Illustrated Story" and Easy Action Record's exquisite "You Don't Want My Name...You Want My Action" box set there seems to be quit a large buzz not only on the web, but also in the mainstream media. Now is time while most of the principle are still with us. If anyone reading this has any access whatsoever to Jim then please mention the project to him before musical history is lost forever.

Here's a new interview in which Iggy is asked about a Stooges doc and feature film.

That too might be a good doc project for Jim. Or even a feature film. Maybe he could even intermingle, contrast and compare the careers of both sets of Stooges.

I predicted the future on this one:

Jim Jarmusch to make Iggy Pop documentary
Director reveals plans as well as new film details
August 23, 2010

Ghost Dog and Mystery Train's Jim Jarmusch has revealed details about a documentary about Iggy Pop, as well as his forthcoming film project, while curating All Tomorrow's Parties in New York. His follow-up film to The Limits Of Control will feature Tilda Swinton, who Jarmusch has worked with on Broken Flowers, as well as his last film.

He told Pitchfork: "I have a new film project that's really foremost for me. I hope to shoot early next year with Tilda Swinton and Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska, who was Alice in Wonderland in Tim Burton's film. I don't have that quite financed yet, so I'm working on that."

The director revealed that as well as the new flick, he will be working on a long-term documentary project with Iggy Pop after the singer asked him to get involved.

Jarmusch said: "It's something Iggy [Pop] asked me to do. There's a rule in my household that if Iggy is playing anywhere within 90 miles, we go. It's going to take a few years though. There's no rush on it."

Jim Jarmusch Working on Stooges Documentary
8/23/2010 By Josiah Hughes

Anyone who can direct a classic scene between Bill Murray, RZA and GZA (see below) knows how to combine music and film. We're talking, of course, about cult film fave Jim Jarmusch, and one of his next projects involves more iconic legends of rock’n’roll. Details are scarce, but Jarmusch has revealed that he's working on a Stooges documentary endorsed by Iggy Pop himself.

Speaking with Pitchfork, Jarmusch said that the doc is slowly but surely coming along. “I’m working on a documentary about the Stooges,” he revealed. “It’s going to take a few years. There’s no rush on it, but it’s something that Iggy asked me to do.”

For now, that's all we know about the Stooges documentary, but here's hoping it will include some modern-day band footage, if only so we can see some We Jam Econo-style Mike Watt interviews.
